Watching brood as we treat with Formic Pro
Some weeks ago Ian Steppler posted a series of videos following the changes in his brood chambers during his first trials with Formic Pro. It scared the Cr&p out of many of us. I use this product every year. So here is the start of my attempt to compliment Ian's observations with my own.

Recovering from swarming, what a hive should look like
Просмотров 1,9 тыс.День назад
Amy and I visit a member of Beekeeping 24/7 who has been having swarming issues with her two first year hives. Having never done this before she was anxious about if they were on the road to recovery or would more need to be done. Its nearly 90F so watch how we deal with the heat at the end of the video.

Here is a follow-up to the Demaree video of early May when Amy and I set up her two colonies in the City of Bangor Maine. After a month we did ANOTHER Demaree manipulation on them. A few days later one was attacked and tipped over by a black bear which ate a lot of brood. This is the first detailed visit since.

Stop swarming and make honey with the Demaree method
Просмотров 7 тыс.2 месяца назад
My friend Amy has two strong overwintered hives that need attension to prevent swarming, one was showing early queen cells 5 days ago. We consider, splitting the hive, making nucs, swapping positions of hives but all these will lower productivity. My favorite solution to this dilemma is the Demaree manipulation which will stop swarming and make a monster hive capable of making hundreds of pound...

What time of the year was this? I’d like to try this method but as we’re heading into August I wonder if it’s too late and would be best to try in the spring.

Newby here. Natural vs Small Frame Bees. The Queens! Are they a Smaller "Size" Bee, than the "Natural Bee"? That maybe the Excluders don't work with Small Frame Bee Queens? Seems a smaller bee "Small Frame Bee" would be a "Smaller Bee" vs a Natural Size Bee.. I have been wondering.. I had a swarm move into a box when I was not raising bees. I have nothing to compare them too. I don't know of anyone who raises bees around me.. These bees have lived on their own for 5 years now. No die outs in the winter, which was the reason I stopped keeping them. So, I am interested in making some queens from them and raising them. I lost 10 of 12 hives twice.

Thank you for the video it helps a lot and avoiding a lot of internet search for newbees by looking up the comment section you find the best answers for everything !!! Plus the creators content Nice to get Queen marked avoiding unnecessary, shuffling in my opinion recently my friend brought me very good book from Russia written by Taranov first thing to know the biology of the bees then you pretty much know what to do by simply knowing when inspecting it just comes to you !! Well bees still can swarm even by removing cups and cells split would be the best what I just did having same hive and adding empty frames to keep them busy!

Peter looking forward to your results. I’m over here in New Brunswick on the Bay of Fundy coast. As a second year bee keeper I know have 5 hives/ Queens. The original queen from last year. Two of her daughters and 2 purchased queens. I have now completed my Formic Pro treatments on all 5 hives. Three new queens got the 14 day treatment with2 FP pads. Last years Queen and one of her daughters got 2 ten day treatments with 1 pad per. I staggered the 3 fourteen day treatments by 7 days. All queens are laying great patterns with eggs, and brood of all ages including capped. I’ll be doing a mite count in about 10 days. So far I’m very pleased with my Formic Pro results. Yes I believe my queens stopped laying for a short time as per NOD’s literature yes I believe I may have lost SOME brood as per NOD’s literature. If any of your viewers are considering using Formic Pro I would suggest they read all the publications regarding the application that NOD has provided. Like all products the engineering, testing and submissions have been done by NOD. It is not for ME a 12 month beekeeper to second guess or try and improve upon the science. Cheers love the channel, your videos are informative.

Upsidedown brood box, huh. I know you guys drive on the wrong side of the road over there, but that's a little unorthodox.😂You're in good company though 😂 young Natalie from Missouri discovered a upsidedown super on a hive the other day 😂 nice of you to try turning it the right way up for those of us on the bottom of the planet. Lucky break, it could have been a disaster 😬 I'll be watching the formic pro treatment, I'll be honest, formic acid scares the piss out of me but I've got to help a hobbyist treat three hives that only got apiguard in January 😬 when he pulled a couple of supers at the end of the thyme nectar flow and I think the mite loads going to be through the roof.hopefully I'm wrong but I'm seriously considering formic for his hives. Great video 👍👋 sometimes things just don't quite go to plan in beekeeping, but nice save👍👋

It was a very bad day for me. I enjoyed your vedio I used formic every year since I started keeping bees, I liked it. I decided to try something different oav 7 rounds just to see because it was cheeper, we shall see I know it was a hole lot more work, formic was easy and it worked. I also tried this year apigard, I like that to. amny way your video was good hope you have a very blessed week

That was my experience this year too, losing about 1/2 my queens with Formic Pro. The highest temperature during use was 80F. The jury is still out on how the replacement (supersedure) queens do, but everything looks ok so far. I wouldn't call Formic Pro junk, but one does need to be aware of possible side effects. I wonder if part of the effectiveness of this product is due to the inevitable brood break.

You mentioned it's too cold for flight. If there is no flight for the day, you can move that hive anywhere you want to and the bees will REORIENT to the new location without issue, and without bothering with branches etc. If the bees don't leave the hive, for whatever reason, for 24 to 32 hours, they will forget where they live and will therefore orient to their current location again when they fly next. In this case, those branches were not necessary.

Awesome. Always fun to teach a newbie and pass on skills that make things easier. I love those saskatraz bee's, but unfortunately we can't bring them into New Zealand yet, hopefully that will change one day but we just got a Carniolan breeder in the south island, ours (central Otago) are Italian+British dark hybrids and they're grumpy on a good day. Great honey producers, not too prone to swarming but aggressive temperament not quite as bad as Africanised bee's but a close second, especially when queenless. Can't wait to get some Carniolan nucs this year😂I'm soooo glad we don't have bears⚡😂 well that's a novel way to clean your suit, I hope you put some soap in your pocket before you jumped in 😂 we'll happily trade, it's mid winter here and 1 Celsius / 33 f so it's actually warmed up a little. great video and always great to watch someone learning.👋👍

4:57 my mathematician mind says you're doing it wrong by draining honey from them. The comb normally prices higher than the honey. If you putting immdetaly into the box the hone which drained will be sold as pure hone, while if you're not draining and putting into the box you will sell that honey together with honeyconb as honeycomb which has higher price.
